After almost a decade of growth, the American auto industry is showing signs of a slowdown. And while a contracting of the car market is an inevitable reality of a cyclical business, the decrease in demand is evident in job losses as plants and factories scale back across the country. President Donald Trump was intent on expanding U.S. manufacturing jobs, and now faces a challenge to his campaign promise.

Has the auto industry peaked? And will President Trump's executive powers be able to stem the likely layoffs? Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, a professor in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, joins The Takeaway to help us navigate the future of American car manufacturers.

This segment is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
